Charging at home overnight is by far the cheapest, often around 2p per mile on an off-peak tariff, compared with roughly 13p per mile for petrol. Public rapid and ultra-rapid chargers are the most expensive, sometimes over 20p per mile, so they are best saved for longer journeys. For a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), charge at home for short local trips and use petrol for longer motorway runs.
