Fuel prices in Birmingham: what to know
Birmingham sits at the centre of the UK's motorway network, wrapped by the M6, M5, M42 and the elevated A38(M) Aston Expressway, with Spaghetti Junction funnelling traffic from every direction. That heavy through-traffic means there are plenty of forecourts competing for business, so prices across the city and its suburbs — Sutton Coldfield, Solihull, Edgbaston and Erdington — can vary noticeably within a short drive.
Birmingham's Clean Air Zone covers the city centre and charges older, more polluting vehicles, which nudges many residents toward supermarket fuel runs on the edge of town rather than topping up in the middle. Supermarket forecourts around the ring of retail parks are typically the cheapest, while branded stations near the motorway junctions tend to charge more.
How to save on fuel in Birmingham
- Local tip. Avoid filling up right next to the M6 or M42 junctions — supermarket forecourts a mile or two into the suburbs are usually cheaper.
- Compare before you fill up. Prices between nearby Birmingham stations can differ by 10p per litre or more — that's up to £5 on a single tank.
- Supermarket fuel is usually cheapest. Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons forecourts typically undercut branded ones.
- Avoid motorway services. Fuel on the motorway is often 15–20p per litre dearer than in town.
- Fill up midweek. Prices tend to be lower on Tuesdays and Wednesdays than at weekends.
Prices come from the UK Government's official Fuel Finder scheme. Under the Motor Fuel Price (Open Data) Regulations 2025, every UK retailer must report pump prices within 30 minutes of a change, so the figures above reflect what drivers in Birmingham are paying right now. PumpScout shows the two most common grades — E10 (Unleaded) and B7 (Diesel).
