Fuel prices in Cardiff: what to know
Cardiff sits just south of the M4, with the A48 and A470 carrying traffic into the city and down towards the bay. A large share of drivers commute in from Newport, the Valleys and the Vale of Glamorgan, so plenty of refuelling happens on the main approach roads rather than in the centre.
Supermarket forecourts around the retail parks — Cardiff Gate, Cardiff Bay and Leckwith — are typically the most competitive, while branded stations near the motorway junctions and the city centre tend to sit higher. Because the cheapest sites are spread around the edge of the city, a quick comparison usually pays off.
How to save on fuel in Cardiff
- Local tip. Forecourts at Cardiff's edge-of-city retail parks generally beat central or motorway-junction prices.
- Compare before you fill up. Prices between nearby Cardiff stations can differ by 10p per litre or more — that's up to £5 on a single tank.
- Supermarket fuel is usually cheapest. Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons forecourts typically undercut branded ones.
- Avoid motorway services. Fuel on the motorway is often 15–20p per litre dearer than in town.
